ATS Resume Checker

Check your resume against the job — before an ATS does.

Paste a job description and get an ATS-oriented report: keyword coverage, section structure, parse-safety, and length — with a checklist to fix what actually matters.

What is an ATS resume checker?

An ATS resume checker scores how easily applicant tracking system (ATS) software can parse your resume, and how well it matches a specific job description — covering keyword coverage, standard section structure, parse-safe formatting, and length. A checker can't guarantee an interview, but it surfaces fixable problems before you apply.

Most resumes are filtered or ranked by ATS software before a person reads them. TailorJob's checker scores your resume against the exact job description you paste: which required keywords are covered, whether sections and dates parse consistently, whether the layout avoids parsing traps, and where the document is too dense. You get specific findings and a checklist — not a vague grade.

Step by step

How the check works

01

Upload your resume

Bring the resume you're actually using — an uploaded PDF or the version in your TailorJob profile.

02

Paste the job description

The check is always relative to a real posting: requirements and keywords are extracted from the JD you paste.

03

Read the report

Keyword coverage, section structure, parse-safety, and length — each scored, each with the specific finding behind it.

04

Fix the checklist

Accept or edit suggested fixes, then re-score. Iterate until the findings you care about are gone.

Details

What gets checked

Four dimensions, scored against the job description — each finding names the exact line or section it refers to.

Keyword coverage

Required skills and terms from the job description mapped against your resume, with missing and weak keywords listed.

Section structure

Standard headings in a conventional order, so parsers can classify experience, education, and skills.

Parse-safety

Dates, contact details, and links in formats machines read consistently; layout free of tables and multi-column traps.

Length and density

Page count, bullet length, and formatting balance — dense enough to be substantive, short enough to be read.

Actionable suggestions

Every finding comes with a suggested fix you accept or edit — never silent changes to your resume.

Re-scoring

Apply fixes and re-run the check against the same job description to see the score move.

Sample

What a report looks like

Sample report — scored against a pasted job description

Keywords
84/100 — 3 JD keywords missing
Parse-safe
90/100 — headings standard, no tables
Length
78/100 — 1 page, 24 bullets
Format
86/100 — dates parse consistently

Illustrative sample — your report depends on your resume and the job description you paste.

Honesty first

A score is a diagnostic, not a promise

No tool can guarantee interviews, and we won't claim ours does. What the checker gives you is something rarer: the specific, fixable reasons a parser or recruiter might miss what you've done.

  • Findings name the exact keyword, section, or line they refer to.
  • Fixes are suggestions you accept or edit — your resume is never changed silently.
  • Scores are always relative to the job description you paste, never a universal grade.
FAQ

Questions, answered directly.

What is a good ATS score?

There is no universal number. What matters is covering the role's required keywords with parse-safe formatting. TailorJob's report shows the specific gaps — a lower score with a clear fix list is more useful than a high score you can't explain.

Can an ATS read a PDF?

Modern ATS software parses text-based PDFs well. Problems come from scanned images, unusual encodings, and text trapped in tables or graphics. TailorJob exports text-based, LaTeX-rendered PDFs that parse consistently.

Is a two-column resume ATS friendly?

A two-column layout can work with some systems, but a single-column structure with conventional headings reduces parsing ambiguity. If ATS compatibility matters more than visual styling, keep a clear reading order — or check your exact resume and see.

Why do resumes get rejected by ATS software?

Common causes: missing keywords the posting asks for, non-standard section headings, dates a parser can't read, text inside tables or images, and contact details in headers/footers. Most of these are fixable in minutes once named.

Does a high score guarantee an interview?

No — and be wary of any tool that says otherwise. A score summarizes parse-ability and job-description coverage. Use it to find and fix problems, then let your actual experience do the convincing.

Is the ATS checker free?

Checking runs on TailorJob credits, and the free plan includes $1 in credits refreshed monthly — enough to run checks while you're evaluating the product.
